Project Description

Adjustable Gastric Band

An inflatable band is placed around the upper part of the stomach, thus reducing its capacity and, therefore, the amount of food that we can ingest and the speed at which it passes through the stomach. The problems that may arise are the displacement of the band and the reflux, which force to retire it.

The adjustable gastric band is a treatment to combat obesity in which an inflatable band is placed around the upper part of the stomach to limit the amount of food.

Among its main advantages we can highlight:

  • It is a technique performed with laparoscopy which leaves minimal scars if it were an open surgery.

  • It is not necessary to staple or cut the stomach, or make intestinal shunts.

  • Weight loss occurs progressively, slowly and safely.

  • It adjusts to the characteristics of each patient.

  • It is a very experienced method during the last 15 years.

What to expect after surgery

After surgery, you may need painkillers (pain medications) to help with discomfort and pain. They will encourage you to move to help your body heal. You may have an X-ray (x-ray) the day after the operation to make sure everything is working properly.

Your doctor will give you specific instructions about what you can eat after the surgery. During the first 2 weeks, your stomach will only be able to tolerate small amounts of fluids while it heals. Some people feel that they are full with only a few sips of water or other liquid. Other people will not notice much difference. It is important that you try to take sips of water throughout the day to avoid dehydration. You may notice that you do not evacuate the bowel regularly just after surgery. This is common. Try to avoid constipation and not straining when you evacuate the bowel.

Little by little, you can add solid foods back to your diet. You should make sure you chew your food well and stop eating when you feel full. This may take some time to get used to, because you will feel full after eating much less than you used to eat. If you do not chew your food well or wait too long to stop eating, you may feel discomfort or nausea and sometimes you may even vomit.

Your doctor may recommend that you work with a dietitian to plan healthy meals that provide enough protein, vitamins and minerals as you lose weight. Even with a healthy diet, you probably have to take vitamins and mineral supplements for life.

Once you can eat solid foods again, your doctor will adjust the band around the stomach by adding saline to your access port, which will inflate the band and make it fit. You probably have to adjust the band many times during the first year until you find the right size to help you lose weight, feel full at the right time and not vomit. You will need a medical consultation every time you need to adjust the band.
